Break Free From the Mundane — Creative Wall Treatment Styles you Must Try
The Structural purpose of a wall is simple; it is a load bearing member, but to an interior decorator a wall is a large open canvas with huge possibilities.
Walls play an important role in tying the other elements of interior decor together. The four walls of a room lend it its aura and set the mood, and this is achieved through wall treatments. Wall treatment is the finishing technique applied to a wall after the structure is built. It, of course, adds the aesthetic element. There are quite a few wall treatment options to choose from; Painting, Wallpapers, Paneling, Textures, etc. Interior designers tend to get creative and explore different styles within each of these methods; Sponging, Fresco, and Harlequin painting styles, for example.
Being out of the box thinkers ourselves, we got to thinking, what other creative twists can be applied to conventional wall treatment methods. Here’s a list of what we think are stunning styles:
1. A Wall Painted with Memories
Painting is a classic form of wall treatment. It is the most versatile, affordable, and easily available form of wall treatment. There are a colossal number of painting styles you can choose from, and even more options for hues.
The best thing about paint treatment, however, is that it opens up options for experimentation. Personalizing a wall with patterns, drawings, or your kids’ handprints adds an element of intimacy. There are also many fun options you can explore with painting, like a Do It Yourself (DIY) paint-job executed with family/friends, which makes for a good story, as well as experience. Pick a wall, gather your spouse and kids, and spend the afternoon making memories.
2. The Social Wallpaper
Wallpapers are easily installable, and similar to painting, come with a variety of choices. Turning walls into a work of art is an easy task with wallpapers.
But selecting wallpaper at a store and plastering four walls with one design can be monotonous today. It’s the versatility of this wall treatment, after all, that makes it a popular choice. Merging wallpapers with alternate wall treatment styles can lead to unique and stunning wall finishing. Partially covering a wall with wallpaper and the rest with a complementing fabric or paint will add an element of diversity to the room. Fusing wallpapers with molding is a popular trend today. Molding provides a sturdy structure and patterns, which is complemented by the designs and artwork in wallpapers.
3. Walls That Are Alive — 3D Panels
Paneling is an exquisite form of wall treatment, that is usually done to elevate the room’s potential and to provide a high-end look to formal settings like libraries, offices, dining rooms, etc. 3-d paneling adds an extra element of ‘aliveness’ to the room, and the design can be selected to simulate nature, like hexagons of a bee hive. Mixing interior elements, like 3d claddings and lights, will make the wall stand out (pun intended). This style of wall treatment is expensive, but the look it provides and its longevity make it worth the money spent.
No one wants to settle for simple. Traditional wall treatments will always be a safe option, but for the bold, experimenting with these styles and fusing different methods will open doors to exceptionally creative interiors.
The aesthetics of a room are defined by many design factors: the space available, number of elements in the room, the colour scheme, natural elements like light, etc. Along with what’s trending, the style of wall treatment depends on these elements of your home as well. That’s where we, interior designers, come in. Gauging what styles work, both visually and personally, is what we do best.
